“I spy your eyes upon my face,

A coward I can’t greet your gaze.

I steal a glance, when yours averts,

But look away when it returns.

I feel your presence at the door,

My back is turned, as was before,

But when I hear your footsteps fade,

I turn to see the hole you’ve made.

Though you’re not there, I see you still.

With no desire within to fill.

A space you’ve left within this room,

I hope you will come see me soon.” -Grace

I had never written anything like it. It was a bit dramatic but it was how I felt and reading it back I realised that I had changed. It wasn’t the poetry of the young girl I had been, the past year had changed me. I slipped the poem into my Italian folder, hoping I might find the confidence to have Jay forward it to Declan one day. I doubted I would ever be brave enough to give it to him, poetry was far more personal than a note would have been. Then, I took one last look at Declan’s hometown and went to sleep.
